Lunch at Mao's Kitchen
Mar. 24th, 2012 02:44 pmMao's Kitchen (Xiang Shu Yi Jia) is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Hurstville. The best thing about it is you can always count on finding something different...

Pork ribs and deep-fried quail eggs.
The name is quite interesting, because while the English name ("Mao's Kitchen") implies Hunanese cooking, the Chinese name actually reads "Hunanese, Sichuanese, One Family" (I think, anyway, unless I'm reading them from the wrong side).

And, sure enough, the menu is filled with Hunanese and Sichuanese dishes. And not just the classics like ma po dou fu and fish-flavoured pork, but a whole range of tempting choices.

Just the three of us today, so we had the steamed chicken in bamboo shown above, one plate of dumplings for Liem, and the pork rib and quail eggs in the first photo. We tried to have the Hunan-style Stir-fried Silver Fish and Pork Belly, but sadly it wasn't available for lunch.
Three dishes turned out to be too much for the three of us to eat (this learning we manage to keep forgetting each time), but at least we were able to box up the leftovers.
