A gift from some good friends. What size chopsticks do you use?

So is that 1.5 times the distance between thumb and forefinger tips? That would be 24cm for me, so size 11? I tried looking for the ivory (from Singapore) ones I learnt to use as a child to measure them but can't find them. I'm sure that they were around 10 inches, so more like 26cm. The lacquered ones I picked up in Japan are shorter, but very nice to use. They're round and pointy at the ends, rather than the square profile ivory ones which are much thicker at the bottoms.

Are there noticeable differences between chopsticks from different countries, or are they just individual differences?

I can't read all the kanji, but I'm guessing it's 1.5 times the distance of the hypotenuse.

There are a few typical differences. Japanese chopsticks are more likely to be shorter and pointed. Korean chopsticks are generally made of metal. I've also see an article in Japan about an artisan chopstick maker who makes handcrafted chopsticks to be carried around with you, but I've never seen anyone use them.

I didn't know that you were supposed to use a certain of chopstick. How interesting.

Is it just the distance from forefinger to thumb? Because that would give me very short chopsticks indeed (15 cm). The ones we actually use are much longer.

ETA: I've just re-read Charlie's comment where it says it's 1.5 times. That sounds more like it and would mean I need a size 9. I've also just measured our everyday chopsticks and they're 24 cm long, so theoretically too big for me, but probably just right for my husband. :)

I've never seen individually sized chopsticks anywhere else, so I'm guessing this is something of a novelty even in Japan. You do sometimes see extra small ones for children, but they're far more likely to just use adult ones. If they're too hard to handle, you just grip them slightly lower down...

There are some differences in Chopsticks; Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc... Here's where I order mine, online. Use the menu in the upper left corner to view all.

That's a cool website. We've got a lot of different types at home, for different purposes. For example, long bamboo chopsticks are very handy for cooking if you don't want to get your fingers splattered...
