Lion Dance
Jan. 27th, 2012 12:59 pmWhat to do at a Lion Dance?

First, look out for signs a lion may be about...
Like boxes of lion food...

Or unattended gold. Perhaps the guards ran away...

You'll hear the drums and cymbals long before you see the lions. They'll sound close even when a long way away. From up close, they'll make your ears ring.

Two lions facing off over an offering...

The dance begins...

After the dance, get ready. It's your lucky day. Literally. While one lion sleeps off its meal, the other prepares oranges.

As they go around the crowd, have your ang pow (red packet) ready with a small gift of money. You did remember your ang pow right?

Offer the ang pow and receive a lucky orange in return. If you haven't got an ang pow, try offering a small child.

If you make a really BIG offering (say you're the MD of the shopping centre), you'll also get a photo op.

Re-stocking the lion. Note that the drums are still LOUD. I don't quite understand how buying oranges from lions ensures prosperity, but then I'm not a lion.

One of the lions dances on a stilt. After this, the lions will work each of the shops and business, distributing luck and collecting ang pows.
