Breakfast at Raju. Find your seat past the trays of meat.

Raju Meats

Order your thosai or roti canai and eat it on your banana leaf. Choose from a selection of toppings in silver tins.

Raju Dosai

Raju Roti

Eat with your fingers, of course (fork and spoon available on request).

Raju Fingers

Disclaimer: actually, I prefer a fork and spoon. It is a slightly more intense experience eating with your fingers, but I just get annoyed by having my fingers smell of curry spices all day.

Plus it's hard to take photographs... Indian faux pas here - I'm not supposed to be using my left hand. But it's okay in the present company.

Raju Fried Fish

When you're done, fold the bamboo leaf away from you.

Raju Finished

Keeping up a constant stream of fried morsels.

Raju Frying

Part of the extensive menu.

Raju Menu

Making the roti...

Raju Kitchen

Ingredients ready to be fried. Actually, I'm not sure what these are. Fried banana (roti pisang), perhaps?

Raju Prep

Liem finds his own way to eat without a fork and spoon.

Great photos. All that choice would be too daunting for me. I'd need a native guide! ;) The banana leaves set it off very nicely and presumably cut the dishwashing bills!

Yes, we were lucky we had family to order for us, otherwise we might have been just as baffled. Choosing the roti or thosai is quite easy, but it's the plethora of curries and fried dishes that gets confusing. Although they do also sometimes just come out with a big tray so you can pick and choose.

That's the ultimate green dining experience! Disposable plates that can be thrown on the compost heap AND no cutlery!!

Yes, the banana leaves are quite appealing, especially when laid out with lots of curries and accompaniments.

J and I like to eat without cutlery in Indian restaurants, but yeah, you gotta not mind about the lingering curry smell. Being a lefty, I'm always chanting to myself, "Don't use your left hand!" :P

:) A friend of mine used to always try to sit on her left hand whenever she ate with Indian families...

I usually try to keep my left hand in my lap, but in France, that is considered rude. Both hands should be visible at all times. Maybe Indians don't mind, though, is what I tell myself.
