Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park

Jumping back to KL for a bit. This may get boring if you don't like butterflies...





This is a Rajah Brooke's Birdwing, named after the first White Rajah of Sarawak (more on him later).



Of course, these things are damn hard to photograph because they're always moving.





At least they slow down to eat...



This is better than the mosquito shot earlier, but it was still doing its best to suck my blood.



Fortunately, someone went to the trouble of nailing a few down for us...



This is a snake head moth. The mimicry is quite amazing.



And speaking of mimicry...

I've heard of him, but I didn't realise there had been more than one White Rajah.

The Brookes as a dynasty lasted just over a hundred years, which isn't all that bad going. Of course, there were still lots of references to them everywhere in Sarawak, from the museum we visited (founded by Charles Brooke) to the James Brooke cafe where we ate dinner by the waterfront.

Especially butterflies with that. I'm suffering from a butterfly inadequacy complex here...

It was a lot of fun trying to "catch" them since they hardly ever sat still. Gassing them and pinning them to boards only seems cruel until you've tried to photograph the buggers.
