welcome stranger

While in Hobart, we stayed at this inner city pub. The service was friendly, the rooms were spacious, but there was one largely predictable downside - it was quite noisy at night. First there was the noise from people leaving at the early hours of the morning (our windows were the ones on the far right of the picture, just above the main entrance). But then, when the other noises had died down, the was a strange dripping sound that just never seemed to stop.

Can you guess what it was? There's a hint in the photo...

It was the traffic lights! It took a while to figure it out, but all night we could the "wait" signal ("beep ... beep ... beep") from at least two of the crossings, just slightly offset so that together they made a sort of "bee-beep" sound. All night.

So, Hobart is quiet enough that traffic lights are enough to keep you awake.

The hotel was also really well located, just a short walk from Salamanca...

And the rather pleasant-looking Battery Point...

Yes, it's a very picturesque town. Lots of old sandstone buildings and quaint houses.

Nice architecture. Love that last Georgian style house & garden...

There's actually a story that the stone used in the facade came across from ballast from Scotland, although I note that the lying internet now says it could also be local stone.
