Downtown Seattle also featured some very steep hills, especially near the waterfront.
Note that the vertical lines in this picture aren't actually vertical, I think I must have been leaning when I took it...
The lights at all the cross streets seemed to take a long time to change - at least this gave me a chance to catch my breath.
This is how these pictures came out of my camera - and roughly how it felt after climbing a few blocks with a suitcase in tow.

But, luckily, there was also another solution - outdoor elevators!

Date: 2011-05-29 06:37 am (UTC)Some of the original, south Seattle streets were even steeper. Seattle had the original Skid Road. Literally a road with Logs laid down, that other logs were set loose upon, which then skidded down to drop into the Puget Sound.
After the big Seattle Fire, some of the streets were filled in and leveled off. The Denny Regrade for one. Anyway, those stores that used to be street level, are now under ground. One may be able to take a tour of some of these, if the Pioneer Square Underground Tour is still running.

Yes, I heard about the regrade and Underground Tour. I didn't have enough time free to take it, unfortunately (hence, you might have noticed, most of my photos were taken en route from one place to another...)
