But not from me... [livejournal.com profile] endlessrarities was there around the same time and is an actual archaeologist. I await with interest her interpretations on the restored Roman pizzeria and sandwich bar.

We had our lunch there!

It conveyed a marvellous sense of continuity... Sitting down and eating fast food amongst a vast crowd made up of all nationalities... Just like being in Roman Pompeii. But with tomatoes. And potatoes. And no fish oil...

Can't help wondering what ancient building they pillaged to house the cafe though... I presume it's a neat insertion which doesn't unduly affect the original fabric. If it had caused untold damage, I suspect UNESCO would have vetoed the plans, and threatened to remove World Heritage Status...

Hey, it nearly happened to Edinburgh Old & New Towns, when UNESCO didn't like their planning decisions...

I would have liked to have had my lunch there, but it was just a bit too busy. I'm glad they at least put in some modern toilets. And I guess it would have been unusual cruelty indeed to keep Italians from their espresso coffee.
