Scene: in the car on the way back from the city. A late Romantic symphony is playing on the radio. It has to be either Bruckner or Mahler, I think. But it doesn't seem to be ending, so it has to be Mahler.

Sure enough, after about six potential endings, what I take to be the finale turns out to be just the lead in to the next movement. Mahler, Symphony No. 1, as it turned out...

That made me laugh! Years ago I was modeling for a drawing group which usually listened to classical radio. When we started there was late Romantic orchestral music on, and it went on without interruption or announcement through several poses. Someone said "That has to be Mahler." Someone else said it wasn't, or they would have recognized it, and it might be Bruch. I spoke up from my pose and said "It can't be Bruch; he's not boring. I like his violin concerto. The other one with a B....Bruckner." And when it finally ended, it was.

Bruckner tends to remind me of film music. I heard his Symphony No. 6 (the one that, coincidentally, has the motif that sounds like "Born free") in San Francisco, and as we were leaving, one of the other concertgoers commented that he could imagine a movie with a man and a woman and a war and all sorts of different scenes.
