Another interesting twist to the Pletnev Dilemma. For a moment, I thought I read that Julia Fischers' Tchaikovsky recording was also with Pletnev and the RNO. (It was with the RNO, but not with Pletnev). That recording is definitely on my target list and the allegations against Pletnev didn't change that one bit. But why would be okay to buy a cd featuring Pletnev, the RNO, plus one, yet still feel strange to buy one featuring Pletnev and just the RNO?

Yeah, it's all about the billing, isn't it? I have a couple of amassed DVD collections of films with actors I admire playing lesser roles. For example, you might not be aware that the pretty awful Michael Caine/Telly Savalas-starring sequel to The Poseidon Adventure is, in fact, a Mark Harmon film, in the same way that the excellent Tom Selleck western Quigley Down Under is an Alan Rickman film. :)

With the music it's about showcasing talent. A soloist trumps a conductor who trumps the orchestra and its individual musicians.
