In which driving slowly pays off...
Oct. 21st, 2010 05:57 pmI was driving to pick up Liem just now, when a car pulled out of a sidestreet right in front of me without looking. Well, more accurately, while looking in the other direction. I hit the brakes, heard the growl and shake of the ABS, and stopped about ten metres short.
This was on a narrow lane that is marked as 50 km/h, but I always drive at 40 km/h. A little bit faster, a wet road, or no ABS, and who knows what would have happened. There was a child in the back of the other car too.
As it happened, we ended up with four cars stationary in the middle of the road pointed in three different directions, then we all let out our collective breath (or at least I did), and headed off again one by one. I saw the face of the other driver, but didn't catch whether she had quite realised what had happened.
