Bach Keyboard Concertos
Sep. 30th, 2010 08:02 pmI was in JB Hifi last weekend, and I picked up this Eloquence CD. It's basically a mixed grill with Bach keyboard concertos by Vladimir Ashkenazy, Olli Mustonen, AndrĂ¡s Schiff and Alicia de Larrocha. I've been interested in getting a piano version of the keyboard concertos for a while now[1], and this seemed like a good opportunity to work out who I liked best. I did seriously eye Schiff's Bach concerto Archive set a few weeks ago, and I like his Mozart. Actually, I like Ashkenazy and Olli Mustonen's Mozart too. And I've been interested in some of Alicia de Larrocha's Spanish recordings for a while as well.
As it turned out, hearing them all on the same disc was very interesting. As expected, they were all quite different. The only problem was I liked them all. Ashkenazy's driving Piano Concerto No. 1 [2] was probably my favourite, but also probably the least historical. Olli Mustonen, as always, found something new and different and Schiff's readings were typically thoughtful. Alicia de Larrocha also impressed me enough to make me want to hear more of her.
Any, it turned out to be $8.99 well-spent, especially since I had $9.46 left on a gift card that I needed to spend by the end of the year.
[1] Not historical, I know, but I've decided the Bach on a modern piano is just another level up from anything I've heard on a more period appropriate keyboard.
[2] Which will forever now be "the one that Chiaki played in Nodame Cantabile - The Movie"...
