I bumped into a colleague on the way back to the office today and she introduced me to her mother, visiting from Guangdong. I greeted her in Mandarin, and then in Cantonese. Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've used Cantonese and my friend had to repeat to her mother what I'd just said using the right tones. I then asked in Mandarin if she could understand me, which kicked off a three-way protocol negotiation (including, at one point, my friend getting mixed up and telling her mother that I could answer in Chinese, but telling her in English), before we finally managed to settle on Mandarin and I was at least able to say I was pleased to have met her.
I'm starting to wonder just who I'm going to bump into tomorrow now...
