Looks like I'm off to Norway at the end of next month. Vikings, Ibsen, Grieg, trolls and ... um... that's all I've got so far.

I've been flicking through the Lonely Planet Scandinavian phrasebook, but, judging from the samples on the BBC website, the pronunciation guide is next to useless. Anyone got any tips for learning Norwegian in a hurry?

When we went to Norway the year after we were married (as a sort of belated honeymoon) I learned a smattering of Norwegian in a few weeks from the Linguaphone course. I don't think they do Norwegian any more and they were expensive, so not much help for you, I'm afraid.

Have you come across Livemocha? They might have something. Otherwise try Googling. I found some Latvian courses that way, but left it far too late to even think about learning any. (I do have a phrasebook, so may try to learn some while we're in Norway.

However, this trip involves Sweden, Norway and Latvia, so trying to learn three languages from scratch in a few weeks was just not really feasible.
