I've just found out that I won the office chili contest again this year, despite not even being in the office on the day it was held. Unfortunately, while I came first in "heat" and "naming", I finished a clear last in "taste", which is somewhat disappointing (as mentioned last year, I worked out how to game the scoring system as it's far easier to get the unanimous "hottest" score than it is to get the best tasting).

The reason I missed the contest was that I had booked a roster day for today before the contest was rescheduled. Theoretically, I'm supposed to get twelve roster days a year, but things being what they are, I had only spent one by the end of June. I'm going to have to make more of an effort to burn through them by the end of the year or I'll be forfeiting them.

Anyway, it was a good day today. I told HL I was off to hang around in bars and bet on horses and she probably knew exactly where I was going. Off to the big city for some book and cd shopping, a trip to the art gallery, and a bowl of ramen.

And I did quite well today too. First off, there was a sale at Fish, so I picked up some Mozart and Dvorak cds cheap, including the Amadeus quartet box set I had turned down earlier at a higher price. Next, at the gallery, I discovered the work of Akira Yamaguchi, who I'll have to watch out for, I really liked his Building of Shiba Tower, and a free exhibition of Victorian art from the John Schaeffer Collection (not really to my taste, but brain-food none-the-less).

Back at the shops, I found both the Richard Tognetti Dvorak cd I've been looking for, but also the first disc of his new Mozart cycle for BIS.

Last of all, it was ramen at Ton Ton, which I've been meaning to try for a while (I was actually thinking of going to Ichiban boshi, but I couldn't be bothered waiting for a table. Ton Ton looked authentic enough and turned out to have both Japanese-staff and Japanese customers - always a good sign. Their black sesame ramen was excellent. I was amused that the two people in front of me stepped out of the queue because they couldn't decide in time what they wanted. I just did the Japanese thing and asked at the counter what was the most popular. I'll definitely have to go back there again.
