On the train on New Year's Eve, something else I noticed was that, when Liem and I fled the ancient carriage looking for something cooler, there were people in the newer carriages with their luggage on the seats beside them, even though there were other passengers left standing for a one hour trip. To be charitable, perhaps they didn't realize there were other people standing, but it still looked pretty selfish. At least one family did make space for Liem when they saw we needed a seat.

Also to be charitable, there may not have been enough luggage space. I have noticed that on recent train trips, the overhead luggage racks will at last take something larger than a very slim briefcase, but we went through a period when the idea of travellers having luggage seemed to have escaped the carriage designers. You were then faced with the choice of either blocking the aisle or hogging a seat.

However, some people are just rude and thoughtless and need to be told politely but firmly (preferably by a ticket collector) to get the luggage off the seats.
