The joy of design
Dec. 23rd, 2009 08:09 pmMy working year ended on an unexpected high with an impromptu three hour design session. Problems were confronted, assumptions were challenged, ideas were revisited and overturned. Long ago, at Uni, I remember seeing an early design for the Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine with a scrawled note saying that it wasn't simple enough to work (or words to that effect). That's pretty much where we were today and is, for me, the heart of engineering and design work. Anyone can take a complex problem and put together a complex solution. The real skill is being able to make the problem simple instead.

At school, my favourite teachers would wax lyrical about the 'elegance' of certain solutions, be they biological or physical. I'll admit that for me the best science is always 'elegant' science.
