On writing slowly...
Jan. 11th, 2009 07:15 pmMy new 500 word weekly target seems to be working. In the last 8 days, I've clocked up 5.5K.
One other aspect of switching to shorts has been that there's a much faster cycle of writing then appraisal. If I'm tearing through a novel draft, I'm more inclined to keep driving and driving until the end, and only reviewing intermittently. Now, I get to stop and review every few days, which means I'm thinking more about what I'm trying to do and how well it's working. On the one hand, this means I go from the rush of "this is the best thing I've ever written" while churning it out to "oh my god, this is awful" in a much faster cycle. On the other hand, well it's only a few thousand words, how hard can it be to clean it all up?
