Summer

Even though it's technically still Spring, today is the first day when it's really smelt like a Sydney summer. There's a particular scent that comes out when the eucalypts start baking in the heat. Suddenly, I'm transported back to the time when I first smelt it, and I feel like I should be out and exploring the city again with my friends. It's the sort of weather for new cafes and parks and galleries. It's the weather for excursions for no other purpose than to see what the place is like. It's the weather for trying something new.

That seems a very early time for spring, let alone summer, to start. Here (i.e. the northern hemisphere, and the UK specifically), spring starts on 21 March, and summer on 21 June. When do they for you?

Summer officially starts December 1st and goes until whichever day February decides to end on that year. All the seasons are officially by the months here. Apparently this dates back to the first colony and the need to determine when to allow different uniforms in the absence of any northern hemisphere cues.

All the seasons are officially by the months here.

Three months each, that is. Autumn is March-May, Winter is June-August, Spring is September-November. In practice, of course. It's summer now, and will be for the next six months.
