khiemtranFinished! Phew, that was a ride. I feel like I've lived a life and swallowed a nation now. Plus, I want some chutney.
What can I learn from it? Well, for starters, there was the storyteller voice and how much the narration carried the story. It's difficult to imagine the same events being as interesting if told from another viewpoint. Then again, it's difficult to understand just how he managed to pull it off from this one.
The characters are also both ridiculous and utterly convincing. There's something here I need to think more about. It's amazing how much personality comes across from so little screen time. It might be to do with the clever narration again. So much of the story is subtly coloured by Saleem's choice of words.
It's also worth noting how well the description is worked into the narrative. There's some real sleight of hand here. Saleem hardly ever has to stop to describe something, except as a way to illustrate the point he's making at the time, yet the description always seems to be there when you need it.
