khiemtranIt's looking like the replacement chapter I've been working on for The Silver Bowl will prove to be a dead-end. That's okay - at least I know now why the new idea I had for it won't work, and there are some good bits of prose that I can salvage.
The rewrite basically involved changing the focus of the original chapter to highlight a different story. It worked reasonably well on its own, and the new story was arguably more engaging, but it just didn't fit with the information that would be needed for the later chapters. That is, in the original version, there were various bits of background that came up and they fit in well with the story. In the newer version, those same bits of background were still needed (or else I'd have to put them somewhere else), but they didn't fit the new story. So, I can go back to the original version of the chapter now (with a number of alterations), happy in the knowledge that I've done the best that I can without rewriting the next entire third of the novel.
In other news, my other active story (so far just called The Translocation Story), has just gone from Whimsy to Dark. It started out with the transported protagonist pitched into a WWII type situation and using his knowledge of computer games to be a fighter pilot. Now, it's got terrified young pilots being marched off to the back corner of the airfield to be shot for desertion. I may have to back off a little now. The next stage, if this story stays true to form, will be Existential Crisis. Oh, there it is.
