Mahler and me
Aug. 11th, 2008 07:54 pmI've been somewhat surprised to find myself in a Mahler mood lately (and no less surprised to find that I even had a Mahler mood). According to iTunes, I've listened to Mahler's fifth Symphony seven times in total. This doesn't sound like a lot, but this is Mahler we're talking about - a little can seem like a very long time. I wouldn't say I love it yet, but at least I can appreciate it now and I can enjoy it when I'm in the right mood (and I no longer cringe at the start of a nineteen minute "scherzo").
Seven times is also significant because I paid $7 for the CD (Naxos' recording of Antoni Wit and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra), and it's just "broken even" in my rough evaluation of whether it's worth spending money on a CD. I don't think I'll be rushing out to get another one, but I'm starting to find myself interested in Wit's well-regarded Mahler 8 in the same series.
It was hard work in parts, but my world is definitely a little richer.
