Beijing is never a pleasant place, but it is always fascinating.

The new Beijing is towered over by an army of new buildings. I've seen tall buildings before, including the world's tallest, but somehow the size and scale of Beijing, with its wide avenues and flyovers, makes them seem ever more impressive. There's a real sense of a harsh, cruel beauty, that everything is slightly larger than normal human scale.

Some of the architecture is staggering too. I suspect that for as long as I live, I will never look at a picture of the iconic CCTV building without remember that I saw it once just two-thirds finished. In fact, maybe incomplete it was even more impressive. An enormous, daring statement of what its builders were trying to do.

Beijing is also a city of stories, and my head is now full of them. There was a lot to soak in and contemplate, and I haven't quite internalized it all. It is one of those places where you can find human stories at every turn.
