Exercise

The next problem to solve for 2008 is how to fit regular exercise into my day. After trying and failing to do this last year, this is starting to become a medical necessity.

It does seem clear now that after work is out. That leaves during the day and early in the morning. I tried the early in the morning approach three times last year and fell sick immediately afterwards three times in a row. On the other hand, maybe that was just due to the "you'll be sick for two years" effect of having a baby and then a child in day care.

The first thing I've been doing is to cut out some of my "wind down" time at night and going to bed earlier. This has let me gradually shift my normal wakeup time back around 5:30, so hopefully this will make it easier to get some exercise time. I will probably need to get up around 5 am to get as much time as I really want, which will probably mean going to bed by 8:30 if possible.

At the beginning of last year I dragged myself out to start running again by telling myself that even if I only went to the end of the road and back, that was okay. I managed it for a couple of weeks before work (running between about 5am and 5.30am) and I found that when I got into work (7am start) I had much more energy and was much happier. I can't remember why I slipped but now I have to give the cat his medication and time giving him food as well as get ready for work and I just haven't managed it again. But even with a 12 hr shift on my feet, that early morning exercise was giving me more energy, not making me more tired. I hope it works for you. :)

Yes, I actually used to run or swim every morning before work. Unfortunately work also tends to start for me around 6:30 am (over the breakfast table) these days. What I'd really like to do is get back into competitive sport again. Playing in a team brightens my week a little, plus it gives me extra motivation to train.
