Actually, I need to find a better term for this. What I'm referring to is when two characters turn out to each possess the attributes the other admires most or wishes most to see in themselves. I never set out to write these, but I do seem to do it over and other again. Quite often it's only apparent at the very end, when one character finally recognizes the qualities that he or she wishes they had in the other person. Of course, you could also argue that if a person is thinking about certain characteristics, they are more likely to notice it in another people, in the same way that the opposite effect happens, when a person might see in others the flaws they really see in themselves. I prefer the more positive version...
